The Service Company
To a degree, all service companies suffer from inefficient
deployment of the workforce. Almost all start the day with a
schedule, but it is constantly revised and updated. There are many
causes for falling off schedule, but the only certainty is that the
situation is fluid.
In almost all circumstances, service companies have a central
dispatch. Mobile service staff maintain contact with the central
office via radio or phone so, at best, dispatchers know when
something is done, but rarely know where their workforce are at any
given time.
A solution could be a PDA phone device connected to a GPS
system. When in the vehicle, the system could transmit its GPS
coordinates to a central office. Dispatchers would then monitor a
moving map display of their service vehicles locations and be able
to route and assign them efficiently and quickly. This would lead
to much more efficient use of resources as well as providing a
vastly improved service.
